The first fact about CVE-2026-108452 is easy to miss: Microsoft describes an authorized attacker. The second is equally important: the CVSS vector requires only low privileges. Together, those details make the issue a lesson in privilege boundaries. The vulnerable SharePoint path must be examined as something a limited identity can reach and influence.

The defect

Microsoft classifies CVE-2026-108452 as CWE-22, a pathname containment failure. The vendor record says the issue is in Microsoft Office SharePoint and that an authorized attacker can execute code over a network. The score is 8.8 under CVSS 3.1, with High confidentiality and integrity impact and no user interaction.

The public record does not name the precise endpoint, vulnerable library, or file operation. That absence matters. A defender should not assume that removing one user interface or one site feature closes the issue. The supported statement is narrower: input that reaches the faulty path handling can escape its intended directory boundary and lead to code execution.

What "authorized" means for defenders

Authentication is a control, but it is not a complete trust boundary. A SharePoint farm can admit employees, contractors, guest collaborators, delegated administrators, and applications. It can also contain stale accounts that retain access long after a project ends.

The CVSS privilege requirement suggests that a meaningful attack does not necessarily begin with a farm administrator. It may begin with a compromised ordinary identity or a service integration that can submit requests. The practical question is which accounts can reach the affected surface and what the server process is permitted to do after processing their input.

For this reason, access reviews should cover low-privileged and delegated identities as well as the highest administrative roles. Review external sharing, partner access, application registrations, and any automation that can invoke SharePoint operations on behalf of a user.

Impact beyond the first server

Code execution on a SharePoint server can be more valuable than the initial identity suggests. The service is often connected to content stores, line-of-business systems, workflow engines, and service accounts. A low-privileged foothold can therefore become a pivot point even when the first account cannot read every site.

The vendor vector marks confidentiality and integrity as High. That means successful exploitation could expose data and allow changes to trusted content or server-side processing. The operational consequence depends on the farm architecture, but the risk is not limited to a single failed request.

Affected versions and the fixed build

Microsoft lists SharePoint Server Subscription Edition x64 from version 16.0.0 up to, but not including, 16.0.20326.20190. KB5002927 was released on October 13, 2026 and installs build 16.0.20326.20190. Microsoft's workflow guidance requires KB5002799 before the security update when SharePoint Workflow Manager is in use. A classic Workflow Manager deployment also requires the documented debug flag step.

Exposure evidence

ZoomEye found 163,243 matches for app="Microsoft SharePoint" on November 3, 2026. The query vul.cve="CVE-2026-108452" returned 0. The product match can identify candidate internet-facing SharePoint sites, but it cannot establish the build or configuration. It should be treated as a discovery lead.

Defensive action

Install KB5002927 and verify the fixed build across every farm component. In parallel, review the identities and applications that can reach the farm from untrusted networks. Restrict administrative or authoring interfaces where they do not need to be broadly reachable, and monitor unusual activity from low-privileged identities.

Those controls reduce the attack surface while the patch is being deployed. They do not replace the update. The primary sources do not provide a tested workaround, and they do not publish enough detail to justify assuming that one feature restriction eliminates the path traversal condition.
